Penetration tests that go deeper.

We attack your networks, web applications, Active Directory and cloud the way real attackers would, and show you what to fix first.

A penetration test by snapSEC GmbH from Vorchdorf is a manual, individually scoped security test of networks, web applications and APIs, Active Directory and cloud or hybrid environments. Our team combines manual testing with tools and its own scripting. Companies in Austria, Germany and Switzerland receive prioritised findings with risk ratings, specific recommendations and a workshop on hardening.

Service account with a weak password allows privilege escalation

Score
CVSS 3.1 · 8.1 (High)

Description

Any signed-in domain user can request a Kerberos ticket for a privileged service account and crack its weak password offline (Kerberoasting). The account has rights on tier 0 servers.

Recommendation

  • Move service accounts to group managed service accounts (gMSA)
  • Reduce the account's rights in line with the tiering model

Why manual

What a scanner won't find

Automated scans detect known vulnerabilities. Logic flaws, excessive permissions and chained attack paths are found only by someone who thinks like an attacker.

  • Targeted attack simulation instead of standardised scans
  • Manual testing, combined with tools and our own scripting
  • Current threats and industry-specific risks taken into account
  • Clear risk rating and technical recommendation for every finding

Test areas

What does a penetration test cover?

The scope follows your systems and risks. We test these areas individually or in combination.

  1. Internal and external networks

Targeted testing of the systems reachable from outside and of your internal network, each from an attacker's point of view.

    • External attack surface
    • Internal networks and servers
  2. Web applications and APIs

Web application penetration tests following the OWASP Testing Guide, including APIs and authentication.

Triggers

When does a penetration test make sense?

Typical triggers in practice. Often several apply at once.

  • Before go-live

New application, new portal, new API: test it before it is publicly reachable.

  • Audits and customer requirements

When auditors, customers or partners ask for an external security test of your systems.

  • Cyber insurance

When your insurer wants to know how regularly and thoroughly you test your security.

  • Assessing effectiveness (NIS2)

Art. 21(2)(f) NIS2 requires procedures to assess the effectiveness of risk-management measures. A pentest provides findings for that.

Process

How a penetration test works

From the first conversation to the workshop: you know the test window, contacts and dates before the first test starts.

  1. Tailored

    First call and scoping

We clarify goals, systems and constraints and define the scope. Then you receive a quote.

  2. Agreed together

    Planning and approval

We agree the test window, contacts and required access closely with your team.

  3. Manual

    Execution

Manual testing, supported by tools and our own scripting, with an eye on current threats and your industry.

  4. Prioritised

    Report

Technical findings with risk ratings, affected systems and specific recommendations for every finding.

  5. Together

    Workshop

We go through the results with your team and discuss the hardening measures. If you wish, we support you with the implementation.

Result

What you get at the end

Not a data dump, but a report your team can work with: prioritised, traceable and with clear recommendations.

Risk rating per finding
Every finding with a clear risk rating, so you know what to fix first.
Technical findings
Affected systems and a clear description your IT team can use to verify every finding.
Recommendations per finding
Specific technical measures for remediation and hardening.
Workshop
Results walkthrough with your team: answer questions, prioritise measures, agree next steps.

How it differs

Pentest, PTaaS or attack surface management?

Three ways to find vulnerabilities. They don't exclude each other, they complement each other.

And red teaming? A pentest covers defined systems as completely as possible. Red teaming pursues a goal and tests your detection.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about penetration testing

How much does a penetration test cost?

The price of a penetration test depends on the scope, which is why snapSEC publishes no fixed prices or public price list. What matters is the number and type of systems, their complexity, for example web applications with many roles, and whether we test internally, externally or both. After the first call you receive a quote for exactly that scope. For projects our terms provide for 35% to be invoiced when the order is placed and the rest after acceptance.

How long does a penetration test take?

The duration depends on the scope and is agreed together during scoping. A single web portal is tested faster than an Active Directory spanning several sites with a cloud connection. You know the test window before we start, as well as the dates for the report and workshop. Tests outside normal working hours, Monday to Friday 07:00 to 17:00, are possible by arrangement.

What is the difference between a pentest, red teaming and a vulnerability scan?

A vulnerability scan checks automatically for known vulnerabilities. A penetration test goes further: testers attack defined systems manually and so also find logic flaws and chained attack paths. Red teaming pursues an agreed goal like a real attacker, combines technical and human attack paths and tests whether your detection and response work. For continuous scanning and recurring tests there is blacklens.io.

Will the test disrupt our operations?

As a rule, no: we plan the test so that your operations carry on as normal. That is why we agree before we start which systems are tested in which window, who can be reached on both sides and which systems need particular care. Tests on sensitive systems can take place outside business hours by arrangement. If we notice anything unusual during the test, we coordinate directly with your contacts.

What do you need from us for the test?

We need a named contact, a clear definition of the targets and the agreed test window. Depending on the scope, that could be IP ranges, domains or URLs, suitable test accounts for authenticated testing and network access for internal tests. We clarify exactly what is needed during scoping. That keeps your effort manageable and lets the test start without delay.

What do we receive at the end of a penetration test?

You receive a report with technical findings, a clear risk rating and specific recommendations for every finding. In the follow-up workshop we go through the results with your team, answer questions and discuss the hardening measures. So you know not only what was found, but also in which order to tackle it.

One-off pentest or ongoing testing?

A one-off pentest examines your systems in depth at a fixed point in time, ongoing testing keeps the same targets in view over time, and the two complement each other. A project pentest suits occasions such as go-live or an audit. If you want the same targets tested regularly, blacklens.io, the platform of snapSEC GmbH, offers penetration testing as a service (PTaaS) with retests right in the platform. For a continuous outside view of your attack surface it offers attack surface management.

Who carries out the tests?

The tests are carried out by experienced penetration testers of snapSEC GmbH. Our team brings more than 20 years of experience in IT security and combines manual testing with tools and its own scripting. Under our terms we may bring in highly qualified specialists from other companies for individual assignments. You can ask for details of the person, their qualifications and the extent of their work at any time.
